“You can’t eat yet.”
My tablemates were ready to dig into their meal when my best friend and travel partner Rachel alerted everyone that they had to wait for a few.
“Just one second,” I said, while whipping my phone out to snap a quick photo.
“She does this a lot, you just have to get over it,” my friend said matter of factly, with a slight eye roll.
It occurred to me then and there that most people don’t take a photo of everything they eat. Let’s not go overboard here: I don’t photo document every single thing that ever crosses a plate in front of me. I do however like to have inspiration for other meals, and when it comes to travel it’s all about keeping a visual diary of all the new foods that were experienced. Again, normal for some, not so normal for others.

Sweden by the Numbers
A few weeks back The Traveler’s Notebook published my piece Sweden by the Numbers, a fun little collection of stats from my last trip to the motherland.
Since I’m feeling a little need for Sweden today, I figured I’d post a quick excerpt:
Bags of Swedish candy brought back in suitcase: 6
Meals that included potatoes: 10
Meals of blood pudding: 4
Days with less than two fika (coffee break): 1
Starbucks sightings: 0
IKEA sightings: 3
Postcards sent with photos of topless sunbathers: 3
Topless sunbather sightings: 0

Stockholm in Pictures

Bikes in Gothenburg
Gothenburg does Critical Mass
I’m in Sweden (finally!) and I spent yesterday shooting all around Gothenburg. Of course I have an affinity for bikes, which led to a number of two-wheeled related photos, including this one. I had no idea that Gothenburg celebrated Critical Mass, but I was excited to learn that this city loves its bike culture as much as Portland does.

Matt Gross wraps up his European Grand Tour
It’s hard not to be jealous of the New York Times’ Frugal Traveler, Matt Gross. This summer he had 13 weeks to travel around Europe on a budget of 100 euros a day for his Grand Tour series. Although in places like Paris 100 euros may not seem like a lot, I personally wouldn’t complain about having 13 weeks of travel fully-funded (and he got to write about it!). In any event, after his summer adventure, Gross has come up with some conclusions which I thought were worth posting as they are good travel tips, some of them applicable no matter what the destination:
- Think like a local
- Make yourself useful
- Go beyond the Eurail Pass
- Rely on the kindness of strangers
- Generosity trumps frugality
- Redefine “Europe”
